Cohesive Powder Mixing and Deagglomeration

How cohesion, moisture, electrostatics and soft agglomerates influence mixer intensity, chopper selection and batch time.

Cohesion changes circulation

Cohesive powders resist free flow, form stable lumps and may bridge over discharge openings. Mixer geometry must create enough bulk movement to exchange material throughout the vessel.

Separate blending from size reduction

A mixer can disperse soft agglomerates, but hard lumps may require milling before or after blending. Defining lump strength prevents over-sizing choppers or damaging the base powder.

Use choppers selectively

Chopper location, speed and operating sequence should target local agglomerates without adding unnecessary heat or fines. Continuous high-speed operation is not always required.

Plan the discharge

Large valves, steep transitions and controlled downstream feeding can be as important as mixing action for cohesive products.
