Sanitary design begins with the cleaning method
Manual cleaning, wash-in-place and validated CIP impose different requirements on access, drainability, spray coverage, seals and instrumentation.
Remove product traps
Gaps, ledges, hollow members, poorly placed nozzles and restrictive discharge valves can retain product. The complete wetted geometry should be reviewed, not only the vessel finish.
Access must be usable
Door size, tool removal, safe entry, platform height and lockout provisions determine whether the operator can actually inspect and clean the machine.
Document the standard
Surface finish, materials, weld treatment, elastomers, cleaning chemistry and acceptance criteria should be written into the project specification.
