Vacuum Mixing and Drying: Building the Design Basis

The data required to size a vacuum mixer or mixer-dryer, including vapor load, heat sensitivity, filtration and solvent recovery.

Specify pressure in absolute units

Terms such as “full vacuum” are not sufficient. Define operating pressure, ultimate pressure, process temperature and the expected vapor load.

Describe the material through the full cycle

Wet feed can behave as slurry, paste, damp granule and free-flowing powder during one batch. Agitator and drive selection must cover the most difficult stage.

Size heat transfer and condensation together

Available heating area, utility temperature, evaporation rate, condenser duty and pump capacity form one thermal system. Increasing pump size alone does not guarantee faster drying.

Control carryover

Filters, disengagement space, vapor velocity and cleaning strategy reduce product loss and protect downstream vacuum equipment.
